Polyscias is a genus of flowering plants with pinnate compound leaves. Polyscias are extremely interesting for their foliage. In fact, the name Polyscias has the meaning of “many-shaded”, which is a reference to its luxuriant foliage. Polyscias stalks have compound leaves with up to seven, or even more, opposite leaflets. The genus is considered tropical, with around 80 species from the Pacific Islands and the Southeast Asia. They are grown outdoors in warm climates. On the Caribbean Islands it’s possible to find magnificent cultivated specimens.
The Ming Aralia (Polyscias fruticosa) is extremely beautiful. It grows vertically, which makes it different from the plants that branch sideways. It can be very much improved with trimming and training. The Ming Aralia can grow tall but it can also be kept small if trimmed. The Polyscias are considered excellent house plants, making others species hard to compare. The plants are supposed to be exposed to high light intensities and be provided with higher humidity. These versatile, easy to maintain and decorative indoor ornaments are the very definition of houseplant excellence. They were very popular but, not many years ago, they suddenly disappeared almost entirely, but now they can again be found in the shops.
