Phlebodium

Phlebodium is a deciduous plant from the Fern family that is found in the tropical and subtropical forests of South America, Australia, and Asia. It is an evergreen epiphytic plant, that is, rooted in another plant and uses it as a source of nutrients.

Unlike the usual fern, Phlebodium leaves are dissected and resemble feathers. They develop on cuttings up to 1 meter long and have a bright green or bluish colour. To the touch, the leaf plate is smooth, its length usually reaches 40-100 cm and expands from 5 to 40 cm. On the back of the leaf, you can see red veins and orange dots, these are the so-called sores, clusters of spores around the periphery of the plate. Each branch can hold more than 35 leaves.

In conditions of natural cultivation, Phlebodium bush grows to 1 meter in width. A distinctive feature of epiphytic plants is a strong and creeping rhizome up to 3 cm in diameter, designed to cling to trees and absorb their sap. For better adhesion, the roots are overgrown with brown scales and long villi.

Like any indoor plant, fern requires conditions similar to the natural environment. That is why Phlebodium needs a lot of moisture and heat. In the CIS countries, the plant is widely used as a decorative element for rooms and greenhouses, because the conditions for caring for Phlebodium are simple, even a beginner can grow the plant.
