Liatris

Liatris photo

Liatris may not offer any fragrance, but they happily satisfy your other three senses: the lavender and purple blooms make a howl point in the garden, your ears will always be buzzing with the sound of joyful bees, and your fingers won’t resist shuffling through the fuzzy summer blooms.

One of the reasons Liatris is a very popular cut flower is due to its unusual mode of blooming. Unlike most plants with inflorescence, they bloom downward from the top of their flower spikes. You can essentially cut a good portion off the top of the spike to bring indoors, and the remaining heads will continue to open and add vibrant color to the garden.

Move over diva dahlias and fussy roses, because the Liatris flowers bloom on neglect.

Also known as gay feather or blazing star, Liatris is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the sunflower family and native to North America (United States, Canada, the Bahamas and Mexico).
