Myrtus photo

Myrtus, also commonly known as true myrtle, is a genus of flowering plants in the Myrtaceae family. More than 600 names have actually been proposed in the genus, but almost all have either been looked at as synonyms or moved to other genera. The Myrtus genus has only two species accepted up to date. These are Myrtus communis, which is native to the Mediterranean area in the southern Europe and nivellei, which is native to North Africa.

Myrtus is one of the most important medicinal and aromatic species from this family. It’s an evergreen small tree or sclerophyll shrub that’s 1.7–2.5 meters tall in height, with deep fissured bark and small foliage.

True Myrtle can be differentiated from the rest by its branches, which make a close head, thickly covered with lanceolate or ovate evergreen leaves. Its leaves are 3 to 5 cm long and contain volatile, flavonoids and tannins oils.
