Ceropegia

The tropical plant Ceropegia belongs to the flowering representatives of the Apocynaceae family. Under natural conditions, this plant is found in the tropical forests of Africa and Asia. The unusual shape of the flowers of Ceropegia gave it a name: in Greek, it means "candelabrum." The Apocynaceae family includes more than 150 species, some of which are cultivated by gardeners artificially.

Ceropegia looks like a long vine with round or heart-shaped leaves of dark green colour. Leaves are both plain and marble, with intersperses of red or purple. On creeping and fleshy shoots you can see upright flowers that resemble candles or cones in shape. In tropical forests, liana branches can grow up to 3-5 meters, but in indoor conditions it can be a little higher than a meter. At the same time, Ceropegia annually adds about 30 centimetres in length. Also, the plant has a kidney-shaped root system, which, like the stems, serves as a succulent in case of drought.

The look of this herbaceous perennial is unique; it always attracts attention as an element of decor. Florists use Ceropegia to create green compositions in greenhouses and enclosed spaces. To many, Ceropegia looks like a fountain or waterfall.

Flowering of Ceropegia lasts a whole year, single flowers gradually form along the entire length of the vine. The length of one bud is usually about 7 cm. Its colour and appearance varies depending on the genus, but almost always has a tubular shape. It is important to note that it is precisely the leaves of Ceropegia that possess high decorativeness, and not its flowers.
