Vitis

Vitis or grapevines come from the flowering plant family Vitaceae, and is a genus of 79 species of vining plants. The genus is predominantly made of species from the Northern hemisphere. It’s economically significant as a source of grapes, for both fermentation in order to produce wine and for direct consumption of the fruit. Most varieties of Vitis are wind-pollinated with flowers that have both female and male reproductive structures. Grapevines only produce fruits on shoots that have come from buds developed during the previous growing season. In viticulture, it’s one of the major reasons behind pruning the past year’s growth that includes shoots that end up turning woody during winter.

Statistics from "Food and Agriculture Organization”, shows that around 75.866km² of the globe is dedicated to grapes. Roughly 27% of grape produced in the world is used as fresh fruit, 2% as dried fruit and 71% is used for wine. A portion of produced grape is used to produce grape juices that are then used as a sweetener for canned fruits without sugar additives and that are "100% natural".
