Ribes

Ribes is a genus of 150 species of flowering plants native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It includes edible currants such as blackcurrant, white currant and redcurrant), the gooseberry, and various other hybrid types. It shouldn’t be confused with dried currant that’s normally used in cakes and puddings, which is a fruited cultivar of the grape. Ribes derives its name from the popular blackcurrant Ribena.

The flowering plant includes a group of ornamental plants collectively recognized as the flowering currants, such as, R. Sanguineum. Blackfoot Indians generally used the blackcurrant root to treat kidney ailments and also menopausal menstrual problems. Cree Indians used Ribes glandulosum fruits as a fertility enhancer, to assist women in becoming pregnant.

Currant seeds and roots are high in gamma-Linolenic acid, which has been scientifically verified as an efficient treatment for pre-menstrual disorder. Currants are used as food plants by some butterfly species larvae and due to that it needs special attention.
