Lysimachia

Lysimachia photo

Lysimachia is a genus of flowering plants commonly classified in the Primulaceae family. The genus was named after Lysimachus, the king of ancient Sicily, who was said to have calmed an angry ox by feeding it one member of the genus.

Based on a molecular study, Lysimachia was transferred to the Myrsinaceae family before the family was later merged into Primulaceae.

Lysimachia, sometimes commonly referred to as ‘‘variegated yellow loosestrife’’ grows to up to 1-2 feet tall at maturity, and its spread is a little less than that. It blooms in June, its flowers being yellow. Its variegated leaves that grow in whorls mean as much as its yellow flowers. At the period of blooming, the variegation is white and green, but earlier in spring season; it’s a more striking pink and green.

While some people may find a plant having pink leaves a bit unusual fact, variegated Lysimachia is not alone in this aspect.
