Bouvardia belongs to the family Rubiaceae (or madder family). It is believed that the region of the tropics and subtropics of Central America, and specifically Mexico, is the immediate homeland of this plant. Flowering and evergreen Bouvardia is a shrub reaching a height of 0.5 meters to 1.5 meters. The plant is perennial, has an elegant shape and quite compact size. The stems are straight, slightly branched, the leaves on them have elongated or rounded shape with a length of 5-10 cm, the tip of the leaves is pointed. Their location on the stem is either opposite or gathered in whorls. The foliage has a solid, dark green rich colour.

The flowering period of the bouvardia falls at the end of spring - the beginning of summer, ends with the start of autumn. Inflorescences are corymbose, reaching 15 cm in diameter, tubular flowers, folding of four petals of an intergrown type. The colour is predominantly red and scarlet shades, there are also species in pinkish and white colours. The arrangement of inflorescences falls on the extreme sections of recently sprouted, young twigs. Some species of bouvardia have a special flowering period - from May to December.
