Primula belongs to the family Primulaceae and it’s a genus of mainly herbaceous flowering plants. The species include the common wildflower of verges and banks, the so-called primrose. The word “primula” comes from the Latin feminine and diminutive of the word “primus”, which means "first” and this is because it refers to flowers that are among the first ones to open when spring comes.

The primula species are much valued for their ornamental flowers. They have been very cultivated and hybridized - as in the case of the primrose, for several hundreds of years. Primula has around 500 species used in traditional treatments.

Primula is a varied and complex genus with a large range of habitats that go from alpine slopes to boggy meadows. Plants tend to bloom mostly during the springtime, with flowers that often appears in spherical umbels on stout stems that arise from basal rosettes of leaves. Their flowers can be red, yellow, blue, purple, pink or white. Some of the species can show a white mealy bloom on various parts. Many of the species are well adapted to alpine climates.
