Pandanus is a genus with around 750 accepted species. They are palm-like and dioecious trees and shrubs that are native to the Old World tropics and subtropics. Some of its common names include Pandanus, screw pine and screw palm.

Pandanus plants are not even closely related to the palm trees. All the species vary in size from small shrubs with less than 1metre in height, to medium-sized trees of around 20 metres tall, normally with a broad canopy and heavy fruit. It has a moderate growth rate.

Pandanus is very much used for handicrafts. The craftsmen collect the leaves from the plants in the wild. Only the mature leaves are cut, this way, the plant will naturally regenerate itself. Pandanus leaves are also used in the Southeast Asian cuisine to add a special aroma to the rice and curry dishes, and even desserts such as the Pandanus cake. Pandanus leaf can also be used as a complement to chocolate in various dishes, such as ice cream. In Sri Lanka, Pandanus leaves are a major and very much used ingredient in the country's cuisine.

Pandanus trees also provide materials for clothing, housing and textiles, such as the manufacture of bags (carrying bags, mainly), sails, fine mats, decorations,  food, medication,  fishing and even religious uses.
