Ophiopogon

Ophiopogon photo

Ophiopogon is a genus of perennial flowering plants that are native to warm temperate climates found in the tropical east and southeast, and also in south Asia. They have a grass-like appearance but they are not closely related to the actual grasses species. Ophiopogon grow from bear leave tufts, from where the flowers surface in racemes that are held on short stems right above the leaves. Some species such as Ophiopogon japonicas and Ophiopogon planiscapus are used as ground cover plants.

In Chinese medicine, Ophiopogon japonicus, known as mai men dong, is the main herb for yin deficit. According to specialists, the herb is sweet and it enters the heart, lung and stomach channels, nourishing the yin of the stomach, heart and lungs, clearing heat and irritability. It is used in treating dry coughs, dry tongue and mouth and even constipation. Ophiopogon moistens the mucous membranes because it stimulates the production of mucosal fluids. Ophiopogon grows best in warm climates, but is for sure adaptable. There are some species of this plant that grow in either full sun or even full shade.
