Nolina is a genus of tropical flowering plants with the main distribution being in Mexico and extending along the southern United States. The genus is named after the 18th century French arboriculturist Abbé C. P. Nolin. Some of the species are cultivated as ornamental plants. There are 25 species of succulent plants included in the Nolina genus. Rosettes of different species may be stemless or even on tall and woody trunks. It has very tiny serrations on the leaf edges and that make them feel rough to the touch. The decorative inflorescence contains thousands of tiny flowers of a cream color.

Nolina has some other very common and often known names, such as Bottle Palm, Elephant’s Foot Tree, Elephant Palm, Ponytail Plant, Big Base Palm, Nolina, Desert Pony Tail Palm, Nolina Sole and Ponytail Nolina. Nolina is an evergreen perennial growing up to 6 metres with a noticeable expanded caudex that has the purpose of storing water. Mature plants develop an unusual and swollen bottle-like base, which is the storage organ that allows them to withstand very dry conditions. It has several long and thin stems. The stems are topped by the crowns of pendulous leaves which give the plant one of its common names, the Ponytail Plant.
