Nerium

Nerium photo

Nerium is a small tree or evergreen shrub and it’s toxic in all of its parts especially to animals, when consumed in large amounts. It is commonly known as oleander, from its superficial resemblance to the unrelated specie olive olea. It is so very widely cultivated that no precise region of origin has been identified so far; however, southwest Asia has been suggested. Oleander grows from 2 to 6 metres tall and it has erect stems that splay outward as they mature. The first-year stems have a glaucous bloom and mature stems have a grayish bark. The leaves are in pairs or whorls of three, they’re thick and leathery in a dark-green color. The flowers grow in clusters at the end of each one of the branches. They are white, pink and red. Nerium flowers are often, but not always, sweet-scented.

Nerium normally occurs around dry stream beds. The flowers require insect visits to set the seeds. It grows very well in warm subtropical regions where it is commonly used as an ornamental plant in landscapes, in parks, and even along roadsides. It is drought-tolerant and it will tolerate light frost down to −10 °C.
