Metasequoia

Metasequoia photo

Metasequoia, also known as dawn redwood, is a fast-growing, deciduous tree with a pyramidal shape. It's native to the province of China and it grows from 40 to 60 meters in height. Metasequoia is a popular ornamental tree. The leaves are opposite, from 1 to 3 centimeters long, in a bright fresh green, turning a foxy red-brown in fall. The pollen cones are 6mm long, produced on long spikes during early spring (and they are only produced on trees that grow in regions with hot summers). The cones have around 16 to 28 scales, arranged in opposite pairs in four rows. They mature in about 9 months after pollination.

Metasequoia grow to be too large for gardens that are small, but can be perfect in a wide range of large parks and gardens. They normally live in wet sites but they will also tolerate dry soils. Full sun is the ideal condition for this tree, meaning it should get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It doesn't require much maintenance. Metasequoia are also known to tolerate pollution.
