Mammillaria

Mammillaria photo

The Mammillaria is one of the largest genuses in the Cactaceae family, with currently over 200 known species recognized. Mammillaria are native to Mexico where they grow in deserts, but some are from Guatemala, Colombia, Venezuela, southwest USA, the Caribbean and Honduras. The name Mammillaria derives from the Latin word for "nipple", because its areolas are carried by nipple-like structure instead of being in ribs similar to other cacti.

The plants are small in size and are regarded to be ideal for mass distribution thanks to the ease of growth and propagation. Mammillaria bloom easily, but most species require a rest period in winter, where they stay cool in order to bloom. Its spines also vary in length and texture. Some have finer and softer spines, resembling hair, while others have sharper and bristlier spines. Besides, there are those that have totally no spines.
