Hoya

Hoya photo

Hoya is a genus of roughly 300 species of plants in the Apocynaceae family. The plant was named in honor of Hoym Thomas, who was a gardener. Most are native to China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Việt Nam. Often called a wax flower, Wax plant, Indian rope or wax vine due to its waxy leaves, Hoya is a classic plant because it lives forever and creates striking, porcelain-like fragrant flower clusters. Its flowers grow in ball-shaped cluster, like mophead hydrangeas. Each of the clusters may contain roughly up to 40 single flowers, packed together. The flowers are great looking and appear to be molded from porcelain or wax. Hoya is also often referred to as Porcelain flower.

Hoya plants don’t need too much beyond the warm humid conditions and the well-drained soil. Hoyas can’t tolerate heavy soil or wet feet, and most grow as epiphytes.
