Hibiscus
In the CIS countries, the Hibiscus plant is known to many, however, it is difficult to give an exact description of the species, because in its genus there are more than 300 representatives. The appearance of Hibiscus can vary from a herb to an evergreen or deciduous tree. Traditionally, the plant’s homeland is the tropical and subtropical regions of China and India, where it is also called the “Chinese rose”.
Despite this diversity of species, many Hibiscus representatives have common features. Glossy, notched and smooth leaf plate is located on short petioles, while the leaves can be any shade of green or even mottled. However, the biggest pride of Hibiscus is exotic flowers of almost any colour, the size of which can exceed 25 centimetres. The plant belongs to the family Malvaceae, therefore its solitary and axillary flowers usually consist of five petals collected in a stamen tube.
Hibiscus blooms with the arrival of heat, from spring to autumn, with individual buds blooming only for a day or two. Its petals look almost always wrinkled and very pleasant, silky to the touch.
In addition, the widespread distribution of the species, the variety of its applications and the already formed footprint in culture are surprising. Nearly all over the world, gardeners use Hibiscus to decorate homes and gardens. Many plants of this family are also edible, therefore, it is used as food and make famous Karkade tea from it. In China, cities are named after the lant, for Malaysia Hibiscus is a national flower, and for Korea it is an important symbol, part of their national coat of arms.
