Alocasia, popularly called Elephant’s ear or Kris plant, is a genus of tuberous or rhizomatous perennials from the Araceae family. There are 79 species native to Eastern Australia and tropical and subtropical Asia, and widely cultivated in another places.

This popular flowering plant is a beautiful and striking houseplant, with green leaves accentuated by light green or whitish leaf veins. The stunning and impressive leaves are big, arrow- or heart-shaped, roughly jagged, and in a few cases, the color of the leaf appears to be almost purple green, black, or bronze. They are fleshy, tropical and sub-tropical plants that grow from underground bulbs. These tuberous-rooted or rhizomatous plants have a striking presence in large containers, or shady garden, or in warm greenhouses or as houseplants. Some species can get to a height over 15 feet tall. The tubers can be lifted and stored over winter.
