Heliconia

Heliconia photo

Heliconia is sometimes called “parrot flower “or “lobster claw”. They are found inside the bract and are always in shades of red, orange, green and yellow. The bracts are so colorful and large therefore hiding the flowers. Some of the Heliconia species have flowers which are upright, while in some they have flowers drooping down the main stem. They are known as hanging Heliconia. It grows to a height of 3-30 feet.

Many species of Heliconia are mostly found in rain forest or tropical wet forest. They do not grow well in dry and cold conditions. In order to grow well they need enough water, sunlight and soils that are very rich in humus. Some of the most common names for this genus are wild plantains, false bird-of-paradise or lobster-claws. Its flowers are mostly greenish - yellow flowers with red bracts and black dots. The leaves are paddle-shaped and are often related to the banana family.
